Private insurance: four questions before paying

  1. 1.Does my plan cover this exact DIN, brand and strength, or only a lower-cost equivalent?
  2. 2.Is prior authorization needed, and who supplies the information?
  3. 3.What are the deductible, copayment and dispensing-fee limits?
  4. 4.Which plan pays first, and how do I claim any remaining eligible amount?

These are questions to ask your plan, not a promise of reimbursement. Keep receipts and ask for written reasons and appeal instructions if a claim is refused.

Pharmacy and reimbursement questions

How do I get reimbursed?

Ask your pharmacist to bill the public or private plan first. If you need to submit a claim, keep the itemized receipt with the medicine name, strength, DIN, quantity, dispensing fee and date. Ask your insurer about deadlines, required forms and coordination of benefits. Reimbursement isn’t guaranteed; ask for a written decision and review steps if refused.

What should I bring to the pharmacy?

Bring your prescription, provincial health card, private insurance details and a current medicine list. Ask whether the exact product is fully or partially covered, whether authorization is needed, and what you’ll pay before it’s dispensed.

Is every MHT prescription free in B.C.?

No. Plan NP covers listed MHT benefits from March 1, 2026. Fully covered products have no medication or dispensing charge for eligible residents at B.C. pharmacies. Some products are partially covered under low-cost alternative pricing. Your pharmacist can confirm the exact DIN and a covered alternative.
